But what is a Speakeasy?
Back in January of 1920, the United States underwent a major change known as Prohibition. Now, suddenly, drinking alcohol became illegal. No longer could you walk down to your local bar and purchase a cocktail or a beer. But the result of Prohibition led to a major creation, the Speakeasy. Also called a blind pig or blind tiger, hidden spots to get a drink suddenly popped up everywhere and you would have to have a secret password to gain entry. On top of that, major crime organizations led by Al Capone in Chicago or Sherman Billingsley in New York City opened up secret bars to entertain their guests.
However, all of the changes of Prohibition in the United States, never really hit Europe. That was until recently when major cities in Europe fell in love with the idea of these secret bars. This is especially seen in Paris where you can now find unbelievable cocktails at secret bars hiding behind unassuming doors.

What beautiful buildings! I’d go for the alcohol and stay for the atmosphere.
I was totally thrown by the idea of speakeasies in Paris when Prohibition was really an American thing. Thanks for explaining that early in your article, because then I was able to move past the mystery and dig into the specific recommendations you had to share!
Glad to clear up that bit of mystery but remember….SHHH…it’s a Secret!
Little Red Door sounds like my kind of place. Can’t even imagine what a cocktail can be like if it’s inspired by the architecture. 😀
One should come early? Good tip, thanks. 😉
It’s interesting that the idea of speakeasies made its way across the Atlantic and Parisians liked the concept enough to make their own, despite not having an alcohol ban. The Moonshiner looks especially classy, and I will for sure keep in mind that there is one specializing in Mezcal!
I have never been to a speakeasy, but the experience sounds romantic, so Paris would be the place to do it. I love the strange idea of having really good tacos in France, but don’t love tequila. I am crazy about books and libraries and my dad and son are James, so St. James, it would be for me. The next time I get to Paris my oldest may be 21.
Yeah, the St. James Speakeasy in Paris may be one of Darcee’s favorite for sure! There is something to be said about falling back in time into an old library or secret location like one of these hidden bars in Paris that is definitely romantic.
It’s interesting that Paris took up the trend of speakeasies… I like the idea of the Lavomatic, what a sneaky way to go for a drink! I bet fashion and trend-conscious Parisians would love that stuff!
Wow, this is super interesting. I have heard of hidden bars in a lot of cities, but I have never heard the term of a speakeasy and that there are so many. A new thing learned! Will check it out once I am in a new city …
Great list! I love finding a local speakeasy, they are always such a hidden treasure!
These are all such unique spots! I had no clue there were speakeasies in Paris the way there are in NYC. I haven’t been to Paris since 2011 but I know what I’m adding to my list now for whenever we go back 🙂
Awesome! Is there one you would really like to check out if…I mean WHEN you go back?
Love love love this! I’m always on the lookout for new bars and such in Paris and these are all so cool. Amazing finds.
Yeah, there are tons of places to party in Paris but we really love these Speakeasies the most. There is just something fun about a secret bar hidden down a rainy dark Parisian alley.
What a fabulous list! I had no idea speakeasies were a thing, and now I have to go to one. Great post!
Wow this is a really great post! I didn’t know what a speak easy was before this post, so thanks for explaining it.
These places look great and I love that you have added you drink recommendations.
Thanks for sharing
This is SO up my alley. I love hidden bars. AND great cocktails!
Well that is good because you might have to actually walk up an Alley in Paris to find some of these secret Speakeasies!
I have been 4 times in Paris, but there are simply so many cool spots to visit and especially to live! Wonderful list here, thanks for sharing.
I use to live in Paris and miss my 2nd home dearly.
Candelaria has great margaritas and it’s quite easy to not stumble upon the bar in the back. I remember passing Le Lavomatic and seeing all the confused tourists wondering why so many people were going into a laundromat hahah. I love Little Red Door the most and when they play live jazz.
You had me at Margaritas!! Haha, who wouldn’t love a fun night of Tacos & Tequila at a secret bar in Paris. Though I would probably be very confused about where on planet Earth I actually was after a leaving Candelaria’s Speakeasy in Paris a few sheets into the wind!
Wow… Speakeasies…what an idea, Never heard of it. Wherever the Govt band alcohol black market flourishes, Universal law..heheh
Thank you…
I never put Paris and speakeasies together. I thought of it as a Chicago thing. Very interesting.
Yeah, I mean they had the all over the United States, and prohibition wasn’t really a thing like I said in Europe or Asia. But in the past 20 years the concept has really sprung to have secret bars in plenty of unusual cities all around the world, especially Paris.
I’ve always wanted to visit a speakeasy, and Paris sounds like the perfect place to find one!
Yeah, now don’t get us wrong, the best speakeasies are still perhaps in America. There is an unbelievable one in an old bank vault hiding in Rapid City, South Dakota. But the hidden bars of Paris do a pretty great job living up to the idea!
What a great list. I’m definitely going to be saving these for my next trip to Paris!
I don’t drink, but this is great! I found The Lavomatic and Bar L’Epicier are the most interesting one. You need a secret code or move a thing or put coins to the slot to get in. How cool is that! And who would have thought there’s a speakeasy behind it?
I’d heard of the word speakeasy before but never really knew what one was. I love the idea, really adds something to the experience and makes going out even more fun! I love the idea of the one hidden in the Laundry place, there is somewhere like that in Manchester, Uk our hometown!
I had no idea that speakeasies still existed. Love the idea of them though and these are all so quirky and characterful! I suppose, given that they all now have websites, they are not so secret any more, but nevertheless, I think a tour of Parisian Speakeasies would be quite a memorable experience ( – or not, depending on how much one indulged!)
Yeah, the modern age makes these Paris Speakeasies kind of hard to hide especially with social media. But, I think the real uniqueness of a Speakeasy in Paris or anywhere is the low key, atmosphere. Remember if you go to any of these speakeasies, just make sure you “speak easy” so the police don’t hear you and raid the bar!!
I love the idea of visiting secret bars. Especially if it means they may be a little less crowded. But I am not sure I want my laundry combined with my drinking. A bar like the Moonshine with great music sounds just like my kind of place. But Le Fitzgerald might be another good one. I could certainly be transported back in time! A great list for a return to Paris.
These are fantastic! I honestly had never heard of a speakeasy before. I love that they’re totally hidden away behind a restaurant or camouflaged with a laundromat or grocery store. I love the decor of No Entry and the Library Bar. We’ll have to track them down the next time we’re in Paris.
Yeah, they are a lot of fun. There are some amazing secret bars in Paris but you can find them everywhere around the world. I guess it is more of an American thing since we had Prohibition 100 years ago. But either way, they can be a ton of fun!
I think Candeleria is my kind of place. Taco and Tequila baby.
Though I love tacos as well, I would have figured you would have loved Gentleman 1919 for the Secret bar behind the Barber Shop that is really a hidden Cigar and Whiskey Speakeasy in Paris!
Ha! What the Americans did out of necessity, the French did for fun! Awesome, LOLOLOL!
We used to go to Paris almost once a month but have not visited for some time now. Great bars here x
Have you been to any of these 12 Secret Paris Speakeasies in any of your previous trips?
Such interesting places. I would never have thought about secret bars in those places. If I do get a chance to visit Paris, I would want to explore quite a few of these secret bars.
Yeah, they look like fun! I hope you get to visit a few of these hidden bars in Paris the next time you visit.
I absolutely love the speakeasy format, and I’m definitely saving this one! Thank you for sharing these great insights!
Cool, we love speakeasies too!
If I ever come here I will definitely try the cognac 🙂 this is such a good post. Thanks so much for sharing. You inspire me
This is certainly an eye-opener! I did not know of a speakeasy until now and in Paris too! I wish I knew of it before I went there last year. What a cool concept and I think Baranaan would be on the top of my list as I like to pair my mocktail with naan bread.
Yeah, I dont know if I would prefer the Cocktails, the Mocktails, or just eat at Baranaan! But the other speakeasies in Paris also look like a ton of fun too!
WOW! What a great read, nothing we’d ever thought of exploring in Paris. We’ve got to add this to our ongoing Paris bucket list!
Yeah, I know when people go to Paris, they think of all the landmarks, all the cafe’s, and of course the food but the nightlife is still one of the best & they definitely have some awesome Paris Speakeasies there too!
I think it’s so fun to explore these hidden places in a city! I feel like I would like the Baranaan atmosphere. I love cocktail cars on trains, so that would be adorable! And it looks like Pink Mamma Italian restaurant would be a nice place for dinner before slipping into No Entry. Very nice collection of speakeasies!
Yeah, there are tons of hidden bars in Paris and I agree Baranaan is really cool! I think I would love the No Entry experience the best but they are all amazing!
The first speakeasy I every visited was Cocktails and Dreams Speakeasy in haryana India but in Paris and other I haven’t search. I am saving it for future because I know I’m gonna need it.
How cool that you found one in India! I wonder if you would appreciate Baranaan then although it may be a bit Cheeky for anyone with a True Indian experience.
The Library Bar also sounds like a wonderful place! As a nerd, I love the name of the place also. 🙂
You & Darcee would be great friends!
I don’t drink at all but I really want to visit all these places. I’d like to go to The Little Red Door and sit there and imbibe the atmosphere there. 🙂
well the cool thing is some of these Secret Bars in Paris also serve mocktails and really cool looking small plates. I am sure the real drinks at Baranaan are amazing but who wouldnt want to just ride the train and eat amazing Indian fusion food at this Paris Speakeasy!?!
Not a true speakeasy if it’s on Google maps, is it? Lol there are several here in NYC that are found by word-of-mouth and directions and of course, bloggers have compiled them into posts. I wonder in one of the washers is a door…
Perhaps, but to be honest, a Speakeasy isnt always just about being secret corridors and hidden doors. It is about keeping it low key and not obvious. Perhaps you are right but I find NYC speakeasy to be very pretentious and the drinks are never as amazing as real bars in New Orleans! Though, as an New Yorker you might appreciate the Red Door Speakeasy in Paris, it is ranked top 5 in the world besting every single bar in all of NYC which I though was amazing in itself!
Wow, they all look like such cool places to go out with friends, I’m saving this for my next time in Paris!
These Paris Speakeasies are even great to go visit even if you are alone. I mean what better way to hide from the world then in a Secret Bar in Paris?!
This was such a fun blog to read. I was recently making an itinerary for France and decided not to visit Paris because it is so crowded. But this post gave me a reason to visit the city.
I am not always the biggest cheerleader of Paris but to skip it entirely is missing out on a lot of history, great food, amazing culture, and even a few hidden secret bars!
Squeeee I love speakeasies, and these look amaaaazing! The Bar L’Epicier in the grocery store is such a cool concept…I also looove the look of No Entry as well – it looks so flipping cozy!
p.s. How on earth did you manage to find so many good ones? Is Paris just full of the coolest bars!
Well, we may have left off about 3 or 4 other Paris Speakeasies that really didnt interest us or were too cheeky. But I guess just due to size it seems to have a ton thus far. No Entry is a top 10 Bar in the World, so I hope you get to check out this hidden bar in Paris next time you go!
Although I am aware of these kinds of places, I had no idea that they were called speakeasies until I read this article!
Yeah, the concept is that when you are inside, you have to Speak Easy so the police don’t hear you and raid the bar sending us all to jail!
God I wish I still drank so I could full enjoy these! Speakeasies are so cool – I had no idea they existed in paris though. There’s still one in Halifax, NS Canada that even has a password and it’s my favourite place ever
whoa, what is the name of the one in Halifax. You know you can always drink water or tea or just hang out at most of these fun places. For example Baranaan has tons of amazing small plates where you can sneak in and just eat.
This is a great list! Some of them are so well hidden and unique. The idea of visiting a secret bar is kind of thrilling. I would love to try the Zelda Martini at Le Fitzgerald. I love the idea of the little red door bar and barber shop bar as well. I will definitely add these to the list for when I visit.
Yeah Darcee loves the idea of the Zelda at Le Fitzgerald too. She loves everything literature and the fact that they named a cocktail after Fitzgerald’s wife makes this Paris Speakeasy even cooler in her eyes!
This is such a cool post. Would love to explore these hidden bars.
hope you do one day!
That’s an interesting thing I came to know from your post. Must be worth-trying on my visit to Paris.
Loved reading about the history of Speakeasies. It is so fascinating. Nice list of these intriguing places in Paris.
Yeah, the idea of Speakeasies is really cool but sometimes they can be kind of overdone and cheeky! However, with that said these hidden Bars in Paris definitely stay true to the historical concept in some fashion or another!
I’m so intrigued with the idea of those historical secret bars! I wonder if there are any stories about them being discovered and what the consequences would have been. I’ve never really been to one here in Europe actually, although I’m sure there must be a few of them here in London. I must have to check them out though, you’ve inspired me 🙂
There are a ton of Secret Bars in London too. Of course the original ones in America were classic mainly out of necessity due to prohibition going on 100 years ago or so. There are tons of stories of them getting raided but they still lasted!
These places look amazing. I had a trip booked to Paris in June this year, but I had to cancel it due to the well-known situation… Next time I go, I will definitely check some of these speakeasies up. Love that you also recommend what to order. I am always so indecisive haha 🙂
Haha, yeah you sound like Darcee, she can stare at the menu for hours which is fine cept by the time she finally chooses, I am 3 sheets into the wind! I hope you get to re-book your trip to Paris & if you go, make sure you let us know if you try any of these 12 hidden bars in Paris!
That is so weird. But now comes the question: Are they publicly advertised? A real speakeasy should not be publicly advertised.
Well, a few had social media channels but may of these 12 Paris Speakeasies are truly secret unless you are in the know! I think for example the Library in the St. James, the Gentlemen 1919, the Fitzgerald really dont promote themselves. A few are a bit cheeky like the Lavomatic and the Bar L’Epicier on Instagram. But you are right, to truly be a hidden speakeasy in Paris, you cant be obvious too obvious!
This is such a fun idea! A great guide for anyone looking for one of these fun destinations in Paris!
Thanks, just share these 12 best Speakeasies in Paris..QUIETLY!!
I can’t believe i missed all these on my last visit to Paris, added to the places to see on my next visit now all the major attractions have been seen
Yeah, there are tons of Speakeasies in Paris to see the next time you visit! Which one do you think is a must see if you can only choose one of the 12 Best Speakeasies in Paris?
